Infalibility

(1/1)

Phidippides:
Do all Christians (not just Catholics) believe in the idea of infallibility?

For Catholics, the Pope speaks infallibly in certain situations, though this is obviously rejected by Protestants.  But both Catholics and Protestants agree on a different area of infallibility, which is the writers of Scripture.  Quoting St. Paul (or any other writers of the Old or New Testament) as an authoritative source of truth necessarily implies that we believe the writers speak infallibly.

This is an interesting idea that I don't think is always acknowledged.

Donald Baker:
I believe in the infallibility of the scriptures as a whole presentation of God''s message, but there are minor discrepancies that atheists love to point out that go against total infallibility...maybe.

Phidippides:
Saw this on Twitter just now. Maybe it's just me, but putting discernment of divine revelation in the hands of "critical theorists" is just a wee bit worrisome.
I. Scripture

While divinely inspired, we deny the Bible is inerrant or infallible. It was written by men over centuries and thus reflects both God's truth and human sin & prejudice. We affirm that biblical scholarship and critical theory help us discern which messages are God's.— Union Seminary (@UnionSeminary) September 5, 2018

Donald Baker:
Yeah that leaves too much open to interpretation.
